I was working in London for a week at the height of this song's popularity. I had been working a bit late in an office by St. Pauls and walked around the narrow street and found this tucked away pub in the old part by St. Pauls neighborhood. I used to work at a Five Guys. They'd play this song constantly but I never knew the title or was able to understand the lyrics. So for the past year the best I could do was hum the background music and hope somebody would recognize it. This song was part of my childhood before I could even understand a word in English but I completely forgot about it as I got older. Until I heard my British housemate in uni play this song from his room and I suddenly felt extreme joy. I cant believe I just came across this song, 20 or so years ago my 2 sons listened to this group and smashmouth...ECT.. they would play this over and over, it would drive me nuts. then one day they were jamming it was loud, I went to do dishes and didn't realize it but my older son came down and busted me out I was singing and dancing I was totally into the music, didn't have a care in the world. I didn't realize I was singing and dancing around the kitchen, till my audience clapped. it was one of the most funniest and cherished moments we had together. there both grown have kids and wifes. but they still call mom and tell me the new music that's out and I need to listen to it, I would love it they say...what a hoot life was and the fun we had. time flies by way to fast...now I dance with 4 grandkids, I play the oldies and they love it...life is good...
"I get knocked up, but get down again" was the alternate interpretation of the lyrics whenever this song played on radio in a military workshop circa 1990's Royal Australian Air Force. The comedic commentary that followed are priceless memories.

The cassette tape of Tubthumper (the album) got stuck in my car stereo and I listened to the entire album, on an endless loop, for months. Never got tired of it....
Is this song called Tubthumper because he is drinking and trying to get out of the tub but he keeps slipping and thumping the tub but he gets up again and then he gets knocked down, but he gets up again??? Did I finally solve this song?
Me and my kids listen to this song while we’re jumping on the trampoline together. We fall down and bounce back up every time it occurs in the song, and it’s a complete blast. Who knew this song from my childhood would give me such great memories with my own children.
Based on the timing of when he says get knocked down and get up again I imagine that there would be two intervals of bounces, so I don’t believe you that you bounce back up every time it occurs
Fun fact, I went to a job interview in the late 90s. When I was driving home(30 min) I said if I get Tubthumping to play I am getting the job! The radio did play the song and I did get the job! Since then I consider it my good luck song besides it is awesome of course!!!
Good for you 👍 but do attribute it to yourself instead of the song necessarily, and also the Lord Jesus christ with the father in heaven as they are the reason you have the gifts you do which got you the job and they knew you thought or said that and the song then played for you.praise be to the Lord follow Christ ❤

When I was a kid I thought this was a cool motivational song about not giving up after a loss. Now I realize it’s about getting piss drunk until you fall down and literally having to get up again LOL.
And pissing the night away. When it came out I (and probably most people) were so focused on the 'main' part of the song, that I never realized that line was 'pissing the night away'.
The FCC noticed eventually and there was a controversy but by the time they realized it was pissing the night away not kissing, it had already been played all over the country for nearly a month.
I’m hoping someone else shares my memory. Does anyone else remember during the summer of 1998 or 1999, an FM radio station on Cape Cod, Massachusetts was changing formats and for some reason they played “Tubthumping” uninterrupted and non-stop for 48 or 72 hours? If you do, I’d love to hear from you.
Temazo!!! Recuerdos de los '90, música de verdad, privilegiados de haber vivido esos momentos y estas canciones...bailando y cantando a todo pulmón!!! Saludos desde Lima-Perú 🇵🇪
This band is one of the most punk bands to have ever existed. They’re anti-capitalists who began as not much of a band the same way most punk bands begin - unable to play any instruments- but somehow managed to tour for 30+ years and donate to important causes they deem anti-corporate. There’s an amazing podcast called COOL PEOPLE WHO DID COOL STUFF. It’s a 2-parter and worth the listen. Gonna be supporting them now for the rest of my life.
"Anti-Capitalist"? I liked your comment. But capitalism is what allowed them to do the things they did. Singing and touring in a band and making money from it, is one of the most capitalist things you can do.
@@forzatuner3916you do realize that just because they had such opportunities under capitalism (whether it was capitalism's merit or the people who won the rights to it is a separate topic of discussion) doesn't mean that they don't have the right to have claims against that system? Besides, you are judging solely on the period when they had a contract with a big label and that hit song was a success (and still is; they even get royalties from it), and you are overlooking (just because you don't know) that many of them didn't come from super-rich families, they lived in squat and had to work at non-creative jobs for a while in addiction to music.
I remember myself (6-7 years old kid) sitting at the porch of my house listening this song in the radio, now I’m 29 and I keep listening it and enjoying it the same way I used to back in my childhood, it brings up a ton of very good memories.

I'm 42, anyone our age remembers that this was THE jam for awhile. Good times indeed.
Fuck! My name is Maurice too and I too am 40! Hahaha omfg!
I used to work at a Five Guys. They'd play this song constantly but I never knew the title or was able to understand the lyrics. So for the past year the best I could do was hum the background music and hope somebody would recognize it. I was just watching Stephen Colbert and he used the song and when I heard it I screamed "that's it! That's the song!" Then ran upstairs to look it up on RUclips. A years journey finally has come to end

Nostalgia hits hard ... Middle school in 1997 life used to be good.. Free from worries . life sucks now.
Same, Adulting is hard, miss the 90's middle school life sometimes.
Remember that your Mind cherry picks the best moments from that time so don't set your expectations that high because you will always be disappointed.
@@Insilzah25 me too!
@@stephanieturner5231 Right you are in so many ways. However things were simpler then. The advent of social media has in some ways made life harder and tbh 2020 has show we all need a little more simple in our lives. Hangout at home kids riding bike ya know 90's stuff kids don't do anymore.
Same 😫😭
1998 world cup anthem when we won, what amazing memories!!!!!
lets make a time machine 😅
Yes
Was also the track of the fifa back
The cassette tape of Tubthumper (the album) got stuck in my car stereo and I listened to the entire album, on an endless loop, for months. Never got tired of it....
I think that it was a sign from the future (Kyle Reese)
Giving you strength & encouragement of the forthcoming war between humans & the machines.
Is this song called Tubthumper because he is drinking and trying to get out of the tub but he keeps slipping and thumping the tub but he gets up again and then he gets knocked down, but he gets up again??? Did I finally solve this song?
@@garretttekampe9564 No no, the album is Tubthumper, the song is Tubthumping
The album is that good??????
React channel brought me here. Maybe I should start listening to more 90's music :)
Me 2
Me 3
Me 4
I was 3 when this was released. very faint memories of I don't know what. but I remember this song. lol
I don't even think I was born when this song came out :P
Me and my kids listen to this song while we’re jumping on the trampoline together. We fall down and bounce back up every time it occurs in the song, and it’s a complete blast. Who knew this song from my childhood would give me such great memories with my own children.
You made it man 😄
Life goals.😊
Based on the timing of when he says get knocked down and get up again I imagine that there would be two intervals of bounces, so I don’t believe you that you bounce back up every time it occurs
Also I’m totally joking
Who asked tho ?
Simplesmente sensacional, os filmes e músicas dessa época, era demais demais 🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲
Fun fact, I went to a job interview in the late 90s. When I was driving home(30 min) I said if I get Tubthumping to play I am getting the job! The radio did play the song and I did get the job! Since then I consider it my good luck song besides it is awesome of course!!!
Buena anécdota
Great for you bro
I like to imagine you were a hit man.
The Radio Gods have spoken.
🕊🖖
Good for you 👍 but do attribute it to yourself instead of the song necessarily, and also the Lord Jesus christ with the father in heaven as they are the reason you have the gifts you do which got you the job and they knew you thought or said that and the song then played for you.praise be to the Lord follow Christ ❤
The 90's ... RULED!!!!!!!!!! Pissin' the nights awwwaaayyy ....
+Terry Licia Fucken rights!!!!!
TheMultiGunMan .... lolol ... I had so much FUN ... from the 60's to ... NOW! But I just can't handle too much of that 'dubstep.' I swear, it sounds like muzak on muscle relaxers. GRIN! Maybe it grows on ya ... like .. mold. Hahaha!
***** Very well said! :-)
i totally agree with you the 90's was the best and i play all of the music from the 90's and my six year old daughter loves it and my ten month old loves it as well

1997 was 20 years ago. Letting that sink in is pretty tough.
If this song came out today, or even 20 years from now, it would still be just as awsome
I just threw up a bit
OMG!!!! :O
Cult of Personality I hate u. Thanks for the reminder... ;0P
A Chaps absofuckinglutely!!!
This song if not got me through the most chaotic times of my life ever since i discovered this band last year
Hopped up and down to the chorus of this song in my engagement party, then my wedding in 1999 with my best friends. Amazing memories. I especially love the 2:01 lead up to the big jumping finale. Thank You Chumbawamba!
To everyone that finally found this song, WELCOME. We have been here this entire time, pissing the nights away waiting for you.
I've been here since this song came out in the late 90's
This comment is criminally underrated
I feel very welcome
y'a ain't pissed until your letters and sentence forming looks like a cat running on a keyboard

"Don't cry for me, next door neighbor."
Explain that one?
Love how this is now a song that reminds us of the good times 😊
I had a near death experience recently where I spent a day and a half in a coma breathing through a tube and this was the first song I listened to once I got out of the hospital. I cried like a baby.
it might take a minute but always get up
Oof man
Now that's the song of champions right there for you, mate.
What happened to you! If you don't mind me asking? Glad you are out hospital.
@@Morningstar-dg4yy I have epilepsy and often vomit during seizures. One night I had a seizure while asleep on my back. Vomit filled my lungs and esophagus and they had to be pumped. I got pneumonia since I had a lot of fluid in my lungs.
When I was a kid I thought this was a cool motivational song about not giving up after a loss. Now I realize it’s about getting piss drunk until you fall down and literally having to get up again LOL.
It's about class war lmao
ladistar
Oh 😐
I was today years old ladistar 😂😂😂
And pissing the night away. When it came out I (and probably most people) were so focused on the 'main' part of the song, that I never realized that line was 'pissing the night away'.
The FCC noticed eventually and there was a controversy but by the time they realized it was pissing the night away not kissing, it had already been played all over the country for nearly a month.
This song brings FIFA 98 World Cup’s game back 😢❤
Yes
Tell me about it! Top fifa of all time 😍
Was it really that fifa, wow I thought it was maybe 01 or 02 lol
Exactly, what a feeling
For me it was Euro 96!!!
The only year when I truly loved football.
This isn't a song...it's an Anthem. And a brilliant one at that!
Jack Thompson YES I love the 90s and 2000-2012 ish music, and the 70s and 80s too
Very true. Anthem for the nerd convention 20 years in a row
Jack Thompson lol no this song is terrible. We’re only here to laugh at it
Up there with the best motivational song ever.
Lucas Slaughter you’re never gunna keep me down Lucas!
I don't know why but that "Danny Boy" line gets me every time. Makes me want to grab a beer to go with my whiskey drink.
Same LOL. I love it because my brothers name is danny
Temazo!!! Recuerdos de los '90, música de verdad, privilegiados de haber vivido esos momentos y estas canciones...bailando y cantando a todo pulmón!!!

Don’t care what anyone says - this song is still a bop that never fails to make me happy.
The trumpet solo is very underappreciated.
By whom?
Progressives.
Yasssssssddddd!!!!!!*
It's a cool song
Agreed!
I remember myself (6-7 years old kid) sitting at the porch of my house listening this song in the radio, now I’m 29 and I keep listening it and enjoying it the same way I used to back in my childhood, it brings up a ton of very good memories.
I'm 52 yrs old & it is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING how music can send you back to a certain age & memory, & if you're anything like me...at that moment...you're trying not to cry!!!

Pink Floyd when Roger Waters was singing didn't lose his accent
